The masses are correct: the shakes are excellent. The burgers are definitely an improvement on, say, McDonald's... but they're not beating HoDad's or really any medium-scale joint. The problem here is that usually the burger is falling apart. Not because it's loaded with toppings, but because the beef of the burger itself is literally falling apart. I've experienced this on 2 out of 3 visits. Fries are great--don't forget the salt. Oh, and did I mention the shakes? Chocolate for sure. Strawberry ok. Although, I wish I could pay extra for a proper glass or mug (they give you a typical fast food soft drink paper cup). Good value. Giant burger, lots of fries, and humongous shake for under 8 bucks. Good luck finishing it. If you're a first-time visitor, don't be fooled by the giant mirror-wall that makes it look like it's twice as big in there. The place really is that tiny. They USED to have Pepsi products (including Mountain Dew), but now they have Coke. What gives? Why is this city obsessed with Coke? Without their oddly delicious shakes, Been 'N Bun would be a solid 2, and I wouldn't go back. But the burgers and fries ARE good enough (and have a good enough value) to warrant the trip for the shake. To Beef 'N Bun: (1) Give me a glass for my shake; I promise I won't steal it. This is like eating filet mignon on a paper plate. (2) Pat the beef together tighter. I don't want my burger to fall apart. (3) Mountain Dew. Come on! Do these three things, and I will upgrade my score to 5 stars. Do two out of the three, and I will upgrade to 4.

Small, old school burger place. The burgers are not my favorite, but I prefer something with a little more "something special" like guacamole or something. The milkshakes are ridiculously good. I love the chocolate-peanutbutter-banana.... mmmm. I've heard the fish and chips are really yummy, too.

  • Ian M.

Imagine a late 70s - early 80s burger stand and there you go. Still preferred over a chain burger joint.

This place is good! I highly recommend going for an early lunch to avoid crowds and get the best service. The burgers are much better then your typical fast food burgers. The shakes are amazing! The chocolate peanut butter one lives up to the hype! The only thing that isn't great about this place is the deep fried food (fish, zucchini, onion rings, etc.). These items are pretty tasteless so stick to the burgers. The fries are good, however. Go check it out and DO NOT leave without a shake!

  • William V.

    Best hand-mixed milkshakes in town!

    (5)
  • Dave O.

Yes it's true. Their chocolate peanut butter shake is the entire reason to come here... Oh, and you can structure a meal around that with many different surf n turf offerings. I had the burger (good) and onion rings (plain- needed salt). Maybe I'll try the shrimp next time... But I will be back for that shake!

    (4)
  • B. L.

We've tried this place twice. Best we can say is edible. Rather eat burgers from any fast food place. Didn't care for the shake either. Maybe if we ate deep-fried food we'd rate higher.

    (2)
  • Brian C.

The foods OK. The shakes are awesome.

  • Amy S.

Milkshake selection is amazing and oh so delectable. The burgers and fries are about average; but if you are ever in the mood for a good milkshake, this is the place to be. And seating can be very limited in there at any given time of day, so plan accordingly.

All the employees need training in customer service... And maybe a gym membership. Yes the food is great, and has the classic feel. The employees left a bad taste in my mouth

Headed to this place after checking the review on yelp. seems like it was a MUST to try their shakes. So headed over there after class just to try it out. took people's advice on what to get here & their PEANUT BUTTER SHAKE IS THEEE BOMB! lol. no doubt the best shake i've ever had in san diego, it beats hodad's shakes. i decided to try their onion rings & it wasn't that great. yes, it was fresh & hot, but it wasn't that tasty. i have yet to try their burgers though. With the shakes, & friendly staffs, i give em 3 stars.

One of San Diego's GREAT Burger Joints. nothing fancy, they do things right, simple as that ! really good malts & shakes

  • Jason M.

I filt like a burger and fries today. This place has the best burger around. I got my order to-go; a double cheese burger and fries!!! Next time i'll go for the chicken burger!!!

There is only one reason to go to Beef N Bun (as clearly echoed by Yelpers), it's the milkshakes!! The chocolate and peanut butter milkshake would easily be included in my fictional Death Row Dinner, as it is a perfectly blended concoction of chocolate frostee (think Wendy's) and smooth creamy peanut butter. The PB is real and fresh, and every once in awhile you suck up a nice little clump through your straw. I used to order food there (the burgers are a step above your usual fast food fare), but the levels of grease are a little too much for me these days. I took a Beef N Bun break for about 5 years after a disastrous experiment containing fried zucchini and orange float (no longer on the menu) but recently rekindled my love affair with The Bun. It's been the same for at least 25 years, and the drive-thru is still ridiculously cramped and awkward. The interior "dining room" is blah, but you shouldn't come here expecting white linens. I will admit that the level of service has definitely increased over the years, and the cashiers are not quite as surly as they used to be. Stop by for after dinner desert! The malts are excellent as well.

Beef N Bun is always a must visit when in El Cajon. As far as the food goes- its excellent! I mostly order thier burger and fry combos. The hamburgers served there are hot, fresh, juicy, and tasty! What really draws me to this place however is thier star attraction-the shakes!!! The shakes are simply awesome and the best I have ever had in San Diego period! I like the vanilla, chocolate and chocolate peanut butter shakes the best and just the mere thought of drinking one makes my mouth water.Ordering the large size shake is quite filling and will satisfy for hours! For great burgers and pure, heavenly, milk shake bliss make a trip to Beef N Bun!

Came across this place by accident. Noticed it while driving by and decided to take a peak. Pleasantly surprised! The menu is awesome and the burgers are delish. One of the better burgers I've had. The fries are to die for! My husband couldn't stop raving about the cherry shake he had and he's quite particular when it comes to shakes. The prices were good and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The place was decently clean, for a smaller, old skool place. Small parking lot, but we had no problems. Definitely give it a try!

Pretty dependable fast food that definitely beats the chain fast food places. I'm gonna have to go back and try the shakes after reading the other reviews. My daughter wasn't too impressed with the vegetarian sandwich. All they did was leave out the hamburger. They had no interest in going out of their way a little bit to accommodate which I think a restaurant should do or else a whole group of people don't eat there because they don't have anything decent for the one vegetarian. She's off that now so it's no longer an issue but I was very impressed overall with the restaurants that DID make sure to provide something edible for vegans. I found their fish and chips to be VERY good--would definitely order them again. And the guys in my family really like both the burgers and the chicken sandwiches. 4/26--We ended up here last night because we got to Windy City Beef after they had closed. I had the bacon cheeseburger which was messy and very good. Son got the same but minus condiments as always and we always appreciate when a place gets THAT right. Husband got the chicken sandwich, which I think he always does because he knows it will be good. Fries were okay, nothing fantastic but not bad. I also got a Mocha shake which was good but I think I'll choose another flavor next time. Everything was tasty and everyone was happy. I don't think we've ever had a bad experience here.

Beef 'N Bun reminds me of Hodads. Their burger is tasty and delicious. Plus, their vegetables are fresh. Like other Yelp Heads, you must try their milkshakes. I ordered their mocha milkshake, while my boyfriend ordered their chocolate peanut butter milkshake. I should have ordered their chocolate peanut butter milkshake instead because it tasted like a Reese's milkshake. I was kind of disappointed that they do not offer a refill. Their fries are nothing special. The place is clean and they offer ample parking.

We went here last night because I was craving a bacon cheeseburger. Everything we had was good including the strawberry shake. The burger wasn't overcooked and I happen to have a soft spot in my heart for crinkle cut fries. The service was friendly, competent and fast. There was a pretty good line of people who came in right behind us and seemed to be regulars. Everyone's food came out of the kitchen at a pretty good rate and a meal with a shake for $7.00 isn't bad at all. We will be going back when another bacon cheeseburger craving hits.

have been eating here for many many years and always satisfied with a big burger, crispy fries and the thickest milk shakes.

  • Gary O.

It's not the cheapest burger stand, and it doesn't have the best tasting burger, but I'm a fan of Beef N Bun. I like the options. I like the Colossal Burger. I like Tub of Fries. I LOVE their shakes. And since I was a fish stick and chicken nugget loving kid I've always been partial to the best side dish in the world criss cut fries (tater tots number 2). There is nothing amazing about the place, but it does everything right. If you're in the mood for a good shake, and supporting a local establishment then !yeah! Beef N Bun.

  • Lee D.

The fried zucchini is the best! It's my ultimate favorite off of their menu. Thick slices of zucchini coated in batter and deep fried to crunchy perfection, then sprinkled with parmesan cheese and dipped in some ranch dressing...Mmm-mmm good! It's one way I get my serving of veggies for the day (hehe)! The burgers are really good, too. A+ for the buns alone (nice & soft!), and the meat was really beefy and juicy. And the banana malt milkshake is out of this world! You can tell it's the real deal the moment you take your first sip. Love the mom 'n pop feel of this burger joint. I should hang out there more often.

Dear Yelpers, How can you not like a place called "Beef N' Bun"? Really, now. Ladies, forget your diets. Men, you will enjoy. I have great memories of this place from high school. They really do have fantastic burgers, awesome corn dogs, and delicious shakes! The shakes really are perfection, nice and thick and made for your order! Plus, the price is right! Forget the cost of gas :) Love, me

The name alone is a turn on! Beef. and bun. rawr... My friends used to live at the apartment complex right next to Beef 'N Bun and you better believe whenever I visited them I'd find myself walking the few hundred feet to gnab me a burger and fries! Sometimes... I'd even just go to Beef 'N Bun and those same friends simultaneously would show up at the same place and catch me ketchup-handed! Oh... sorry, I just wanted the burger and not your companionship today! That didn't bode well. In any case. What I love about Beef 'N Bun: -the beef! -the bun! -the cheap prices! -quick indoor service! -friendly indoor people! -delicious chocolate/peanut butter shake! -the malts! -comfortable indoor seating! -comfortable outdoor seating! -wonderfully tasty crimp cut french fries! What Beef 'N Bun could do without: -slow ass drive-thru -rude drive-thru attendants -awkward parking lot which you can't get out of if the drive-thru is backed up (which is almost always) -sometimes they overcook the fries The outdoor seating is quite nice. Sometimes someone from the kitchen area will walk your food out to you. Is that considered waiter service? I'm not sure. All in all, Beef 'N Bun holds a special place in my heart, my stomach... and the toilet. Goes in great, comes out just fine too!

Yes, my eyes are bigger than my tummy. Although I've always known this, it never proved more true than yesterday. My burger at Beef 'N Bun was huge-mungous. I orderd the 1/2 lb burger, fries, fried zucchini, and by marwin a. request, a chocolate peanut butter milkshake. Burger was fresh and standard burger tasting. Better than In-n-Out in my opinion. The bun was unique. The 1/2 lb of meat was way too much for me but I wasn't about to waste beef, so I forced it down. I did, however, take 1/2 the shake and 3/4 of the zucchini home. I shouldn't have. The zucchini was pretty nasty once it got cold n soggy. The shake was great though, even after I tossed it in the freezer and finished it off hours later. I am for sure, going back to Beef n Bun. Their chocolate peanutbutter shake was so good. Since its so close to church, I just might have to make this one of fav Sunday lunch spots.

Food Snobbery. It's not about eating healthy or eating 'organic'. It's definitely not about paying more just so I can look down my nose at everyone else. For me it's about knowing what taste, texture, and appearance are. Knowing and enjoying all that food has to offer. Unlike most of America, that seem to me allergic to flavor, I want each meal to be an encounter, a sexual experience from the neck up. I'm never satisfied by simply stuffing food in my mouth and swallowing. I'm only satiated after finding the balance between salty and sweet, the harmony of texture and temperature. I don't eat, I dine. If that makes me a snob, then so be it. Give me my crown of buffet brambles, and let me drag the culinary cross of shame up the mount of public persecution. But what does all this have to do with the "Beef'n'Bun"? I had overdone the taco shops lately and wasn't in the mood for a sandwich, so I thought I'd jump on iYelp and find something nearby. The only local place left that I hadn't sampled was "Beef'n'bun". Oh God. I drive by that place weekly and make cracks about them staying in business. Housed in a worked over Orange Julius, one can only imagine what kind of cardboard carne they cram in between a couple of day old Kaisers. The reviews were all rather positive. Even one 'ROTD'. Several ranted about the milkshakes, and their own decadent attraction. I figured I'd break from my normal discriminations and give it a try. Standing in line, I was perplexed as to what to order. It all seemed rather plain. The person ahead of me finished, and the clerk called out to me "for here or to-go sir?" I wasn't really ready yet but I stepped forward and just blurted out "A Monster Triple burger, fried zucchini, and a peanut butter and chocolate shake."...."oh, and to-go on that". WTF just came over me!? What would possess me to order THAT? I can't explain the demonic force that entered my limp body, and wildly took over my conscience and reasoning, calling out satanic hailings to the gastronomic nether world. It must have been power of suggestion over something I read in the reviews, but by the time I had taken out my money, I was already starting to re-consider what I was about to subject my body to. Oh well.... We talk about the fattening of America. We say we are changing our habits. We feel guilty. We worry about our health. Then....we 'mac' down on that super-sized death sentence, and chase it with a shot of instant artery clogger. We tell ourselves that we'll make up for it with a few extra reps on the life cycle, or an extra quarter mile of power walking. We somehow cave to our weaknesses and make our selves feel better by justifying the debauchery with penance. "Our Father for I have sinned, it has been two weeks since my last cheeseburger." This thing that I brought into my home, this embodiment of the damned, this devil of cholesterol, was consuming me, not I it. The carnal sins of eating carried their own global burden, in the form of saturated grease. Several acres of Ice caps could have been saved by powering my neighbors hybrid with the drippings from this mess. Three layers of fatty oozing slabs of carnage. It was tasteless and messy. I couldn't put it down. I couldn't make myself stop. I kept shoveling it down like a hung-over freshman, late on midterm morning. The fried zucchini, came in there own bath of hell's anointing oil. Long battered slabs of searing veggie. Not particularly flavorful, they were about as spicy as Sunday sermon. These satanic spears were big though. Some ugly librarian is probably missing her substitute lover right now. The specter side dish, like its evil predecessor, kept me eating. Powerless to its call, I couldn't put it down. Consuming it to its end. Returning it to the bowels of the earth. That is, if I ever get it to pass my bowels. If there was a celestial side to this meal, it was manifested in the silken wings of a milkshake angel. A heavenly concoction of peanut butter, divine chocolate, and milk suckled straight from the virgin mother's tittie. A delightful desert, blended by the hand of god, delivered on the back cherubs. And it was that same hand of god, who struck down upon me with great vengeance and furious anger, for the blasphemy I write here. For as I drank he came down from the mountain and hit me in the back of the head with the stone tablets of an ice cream headache. I hated this meal. I hate what it represents; I hate the gastric sabotage it wreaks upon our society. And yet, somehow, I know I will be back for more. I am a food snob. I snub those who say they enjoy tasteless boring food. I belittle those who won't eat something because of it's color, texture, or name. But, in all my piety, I am humbled by simple fatty, greasy, stuff thrown in a fryer. For I walk through the valley in the shadow of heart disease...

Burgers are better then the fries and the shakes are better then the burgers. The burger meat could of used more flavor and possibly a better bun. The fries reminded me of snack bar fries, that you get at a little league baseball game. However, the shake was pretty good! As we sat and ate, I could see why several people just ordered shakes. The parking lot was a little odd, as well. The drive thru line was long and wrapped around the building, which made parking difficult. Been there, done that.

Burgers are small, fries could be better. Have a very wide variety on the menu, the shakes are phenomenal. Staff are okay and they have a fish aquarium. Don't take the drive thru, it's a ridiculous wait time.

This place is an old school mom n pop burger joint that looks like a throwback from the 80s. I'm pretty sure their card terminal is still connected via a dial-up connection (a phone call interrupted my payment processing) and the cashier had to ring me up a second time. I found that mildly amusing because who the heck uses dial-up in this day and age?! The menu is super simplistic and reminds me of In-N-Out. I personally like when restaurants have minimal menu items because they can focus more attention on making their food good. Apparently their signature menu items are their milkshakes. Just ctrl+f the word "shake" when viewing the yelp page and see how many times it's mentioned. It's definitely not their beef n buns which I felt were a bit lacking. It felt a wee bit too dry for my liking but that can be easily mended with some minor tweaking. I really want to give this place another chance because they do have potential for greatness. Their milkshakes are some of the best in the area but by being in such close proximity to other awesome burger spots like Five Guys and Anny's Fine Burgers, they're going to need to bring something different to the table to attract the customers.

Guess what?! It's not just burgers & shakes...Who knew?! They have fish and chicken sandwiches and 85¢ coffee! I had the junior burger, it doesn't come with lettuce, other than that, my meal was perfect... Ok fries, bomb shake. I left satisfied.

I friend who lived near by this place told me they have some good grub here, so I decided to give the place a try. I ordered the bacon cheese burger with no sauce for $3.79 and a side of onion rings for $2.79. The burger was good. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/TcSk… ) The beef patty was flavorful and the bacon was nice and crispy. It had a nice amount of onions and crispy lettuce. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/TcSk… ) The bun was really good. Good burger. The onions rings unfortunately were screaming for some seasoning. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/TcSk… ) They were very bland and would of benefited from a generous salt shaking after they came out of the fryer. The breading was more like a tempura batter and was a little on the thick side. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/TcSk… ) The onions inside were nice and crispy still and had good flavor. Th service was nice. Overall the burger was good. Definitely better than most chain fast food places, but not as good Hodad's or Rocky's, but a good burger nevertheless.

I've been coming to Beef n Bun since I was a child. I also frequented Fred's in Alpine, which is (was?) owned by the same family. I love that they have fish n chips. The burgers are good too, kinda in n out-ish. The shakes are always good. Peanut Butter Chocolate Banana? Yes please. So good. I can't say this is the best restaurant on earth, it's simple, not super cheap, but really tasty.

I used to live right next to this place and would stop in a couple times a week. Really tasty burgers. Too bad there arent more little burger places like this any more. The shakes and malts here are really outstanding. Whenever im in the area i make sure to stop in. Great place.

Better than most burger joints, shakes were great as were the onion rings. The fries were so-so and the burger was good. The service was quick and very helpful. Place was clean and had a great atmosphere. I would recommend you give this place a try.

This place is a bit out of the way if you do not live in the area but worth a special trip especially for the milkshakes. Try the peanut butter, so very good! Burgers are fresh and so are the fries. Try the fried zucchini for a change of pace. Good value for the money, large fish tank to keep the kids entertained.

This place has the best shakes!! Been a customer since 2000 and although I've moved out of the area, when I come to visit my parents I try and make a stop at Beef n Bun. I get a chocolate-banana milk shake and fries and my husband gets a chocolate-peanut butter-banana milk shake! Amazing!!

I've lived in Fletcher Hills my whole life so I'm very familiar with BNB. My mom even ate here in the early 70s when she was in high school. The food is good. Don't expect a sit down TGIFridays burger - but what you get is fresh, tasty, and quality. The fries are okay but their onion rings used to be amazing in the 1990s. Since then they can be hit or miss, too greasy, too much batter, not enough batter, etc. I think it really depends in who is working there that night. My parents love the fish & chips. Ok, now the whole reason you came here - that milkshake! Holy crap that thing is delicious!!!! My fav is the chocolate peanut butter but chocolate banana, strawberry banana, vanilla peanut butter, and plain ole chocolate is fabulous as well. I will crave a milkshake from here. Obviously you're not counting calories if you munch here but do expect it to be a bit expensive. To feed my family of three it is usually at least $30 (10 per person) but the food is so good you just can't help but order too much.

This is my husband favorite burger place in our area. I have only eaten here a few times and have been pretty satisfied. GOOD: Burgers, onion rings (someone was complaining about them being unseasoned and flavorless, remember it's an ONION, it's full of it's own flavor), fried zucchini (yes the pieces are huge, somehow this was a complaint from someone else) shakes NOT SO GOOD: the fries are super greasy and lacking in flavor We haven't ordered breakfast from Beef N Bun yet but my husband swears by this place so we will eventually I'm sure. Customer service is average. They're always polite but not exactly friendly. Politeness is good enough for me though so I'm not complaining. My husband would give this place 5 stars if he was rating. I would give it closer to 3.5 stars if I could.

It's all about the CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER shake!!! If your a true Choco-Peanut butter lover this is the place for you to find the holy grail of chocolate peanut butter shakes.. The rest of the food is also delicious. One of the best places to find a good old fashioned juicy burger and fries.. Only downside is the old tiny building, but maybe thats part of its charm. At any rate, they do have a drive through so you can enjoy your lunch in the comfort of your own home.. Basically its the ultimate place to combine your love of French fries and chocolate shakes..

Solid burger and fries combo for 6'bucks. I doubt much has changed here in 40 years which is good. Good family vibe and staff is friendly.

Quarter pound cheeseburger, yummy crispy crinkle cut fries, and a chocolate shake. $7.99. Perfect lunch. And they check your ID when you use your debit card. How cool is that?

Checked this place out after hiking Cowles Mtn and reading the great reviews on here. This place did not disappoint, the burgers, blt, fries and Shakes were delicious! They also allowed dogs on the patio, will be back sometime in the near future for sure.

Unassuming little place you have probably driven by many times and never stopped I come here every now and again when the mood hits. I decided to introduce the Partner in Crime to this place in my hood. I had heard the milkshakes are pretty good and since he is a fan of shakes I thinks to myself..why the heck not Not sure what day we went, but it was after ice skating and I was starving. I went for the legendary battered Zucchini I enjoy so much, the BLT and PIC went for the fish sandwich and shake. The Zucchini hasn't really changed too much since I was here a year ago. ..maybe a dash smaller? All I know is it can easily feed two people and it is under 3.00. Mister enjoyed the shake highly, in fact it didn't last long. The sandwiches were decent, and did the job What stands out most about this place is it being family owned and that the staff actually seems to enjoy your presence. Likes hey thanks for bringing in money..Hey thanks for coming in. The food is not going to knock you out but having people at least put on a good show and act like it is good to see you is a nice thing. I would pay for that any day

Five stars for the milkshakes! The peanut butter is my absolute favorite. And they use actual peanut better so you know it's good. Not some flavoring, real peanut butter. Get it with banana you will see them peeling it and adding it in. So good.

Best shakes around by far. The rest of the food is pretty good.

Upon entering the place was a little messy but then again it was dinner time. The. Customer service was very friendly and made my husband and I feel welcome. We got a bacon cheeseburger a hamburger fries, onion rings, a chocolate shake and a chocolate peanut butter shake. The hamburgers were tasty, nothing to write home about. The fries and onion rings were grossly under seasoned. Once you put salt on them they were good though. The only reason I will go back to is place and the only reason they get four stars is for the chocolate peanut butter shake. I will be going back for them, very very tasty!

This place is terrible. Ordered the BBQ chkn and it was very bad. It wasn't even a BBQ chicken, it was a dry grilled chicken, slapped with a terrible bbq sauce. Whats more the bbq sauce was only applied to half of my sandwich. Don't think i will be returning. Boooo

Do: Order the Peanut Butter Chocolate Shake. It's pretty amazing. Don't: Eat your meal whilst sitting next to the eel in the fish tank. That sucker scared the crap out of me. Kids working here were pleasant, food came fast and was pretty fresh and delicious.

we tried the monster burger, fish and chips and choc peanut butter shake. We think they forgot to season the burger and the fish or something. We ended up putting salt and pepper ourselves. The shake is pretty good.

Tried this spot for the first time after seeing the reviews. First aoff... Place was super clean and not too many people there. Drive though seemed the thing do. The staff was great and really friendly. I had heard great things about the burgers and shakes and that's what I stuck to on this trip. I offered the double burger, zucchini , fries , and shake. I was really let down by the burger. It was ok not the best... It was ok.. I could of done the same at home. Fries were like the frozen ones at the market not to great. McDonalds or weinersnitzel fries are so much better. Zucchini were a huge let down.. Way to big and not enough batter on them. If I wanted healthy I would of went to souplantation for the salad bar. The shack was really good. I did the chocolate and peanut butter and was great. Although the shake was really good, I went to eat not drink ice cream. Overall it's ok if you live close.

Guilty goodness. I try to stay away but when I reallyyyyy crave something bad I come here for the most amazing chocolate peanut butter milkshake. Doesn't get any better. It's so sweet I can't finish one by myself but it is so so yummy. Definitely recommend their milkshakes. I've never tried their food though. My review is simply for that chocolate peanut butter milkshake!

5 stars for shakes, burgers and cool car shows back in the day-whie I dont live in the area anymore, its still worth the drive to order a chocolate peanut butter shake. Good to see this place has withstood the test of time and outlived the passing burger fad. An east county staple for many years to come.

They do take a little longer than your average fast food place. Its well worth the wait. They use fresh peanut butter and bananas to make amazing shakes. Hamburgers are delicious.

I was referred to this place by a good friend now stationed @ Quantico, Va. I paid a visit earlier today and (as recommended) tried the peanut butter & chocolate milkshake. This was one of those "OMG delicious!" This place was very clean, cashier was very pleasant and business was 'brisk' as I could tell. I ordered the fish and chips; switched the chips for onion rings. Got the order piping hot & noticed right away the onion rings were H U G E ! The fried (cod) fish pieces were a healthy size as well; nobody would leave hungry eating that, for sure! Overall, I'm very pleased I drove 8 miles out of my way for this place, and will surely go again! For a small "mom-n-pop" style restaurant, I HIGHLY recommend this place! Dr E Terrell San Diego

Took my family there a couple of nights ago, anxious for them to taste what I had enthusiastically called the best burger I'd ever eaten. But it seems that although the burgs were still righteous, the fried things failed big time. What we liked: The burgers were still the bomb. Fresh tasting, the buns were soft, the veggies were fresh and the meat patties, although not thick and big, tasted like real meat. The vanilla and strawberry shakes were thick enough to be legit and smooth enough to drink through a straw. Not too sweet, truly on point. The young, friendly cashier was very sweet and very helpful, the highlight of our visit. What we didn't like: The french fries were warm and some were burned, they tasted as though they had been sitting under a heating lamp for awhile. The onion rings while technically very yummy looking, were a major disappointment. The batter crust was super crispy but just like the fries, they had NOT ONE GRAIN OF SALT OR SEASONING. How does that happen? If there is not salt, no seasoning, then all you're eating are chunks of fried potato and crunchy, wide onion rings. By the way, the staff is "off putting" as the other reviewer wrote but beware about saying anything less than complimentary about the owners. Yikes!

Good Hamburgers and great shakes. Never had a problem with service or food. If you like burgers and don't want to wait in line for In N out check this place out!

5 stars for the milkshakes, probably the best shakes and malts ever. The peanut butter and banana shake is so tasty and bomb. The burgers are great too, the deep fried stuff like fish and onion rings could be a little better. But stick to the burgers, breakfast sandwiches and awesome shakes and you are good.

This is one of my favorite burger places. I probably drove by this place over 10 times before I decided to stop. I thought to myself, it has to be good just from looking at the outside. Sure enough, the burger was soooo good. Cooked well done and fries were delicious. Can't wait to come back and have a shake.

    (5)
  • Rachel R.

I just moved right next door from this place and haven't tried the burgers yet but the fish and chips are good. I really just have to yelp about the shakes, the banana is made with a whole fresh banana and topped with like 4 inches of whipped cream. This is gonna be a problem for my diet!!

Was craving a milkshake, was in the area, so yay! Milkshake was creamy, not too sweet, but also not hard or runny, just the perfect consistency for a straw! I was a happy girl!

Burgers here are decent, but I much prefer the Fish sandwich or Fish and Chips. Very good Cod!! The chicken sandwiches are nice as well, and of course the ice cream shakes are legendary. PB shake yum...

I've tried basically everything on the menu- delicious. Burgers and juicy and as big as you'd like, shakes are thick and enormous. Can't do better for a burger and shake joint. Only suggestion for improvement would be to update the dining room, not the most comfortable. Still a fav!

I love this place. Double bacon burger is the best I've ever had and the fried fish is so good with the tartar sauce. They have many different flavored shakes but they have changed something in the ice cream or the shake mix they use. It is not the same nor is it as good as it used to be. But the burgers are handmade and taste like home barbecued The place is always busy so expect to wait but it's well worth it

Two words come to mind when I think of this hamburger joint and that's "Banana shake." I first ate at this place about 6 or 7 years ago and even though I thought the cheeseburgers were just average, the banana shake and French fries were the real highlight of this place. I since have started to get tired of the French fries here since they are similar to the ones you can buy from the freezer section of any grocery store and just deep fry yourself, but I don't know anywhere else that actually uses real banana and vanilla ice cream in a blender to make their shakes like they do here. I prefer the grilled chicken sandwich on most of my visits and rarely order the cheeseburgers anymore since I don't like eating burgers from any fast food place unless it's from Fuddruckers or somewhere similar to those types of burgers. The bacon here is some of the best compared to any other fast food place so I will give them credit for that. Also, they have some decent fish and chips but the fish is overly battered in my opinion. Really do love the whole vibe of this small mom and pop type burger joint and the customer service has always been on point here. I try and swing by here if I'm in the area, but otherwise it's really out of the way for me.

Umm,yes, I know that today is Ash Wednesday. Umm,yes, I know that good Catholics are supposed to fast today. Umm,yes, I know that semi-good Catholics who cannot fast ,are not supposed to eat red meat today. I had lunch from Beef 'N Bun today. YES!, Beef 'N Bun, on a Holy Day. I could say that I was on my way to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church which is 3 blocks away, but I won't. I will not make any excuses. I was hungry for Beef ,'N Bun. The truth shall set me free!!! I went in,just thinking I would just order their fish and chips, and fried zucchini, but I saw the picture of the MONSTER burger . Three huge ,thick, juicy, patties, melted cheeses, fresh sliced tomatoes, onions, lettuce. My decision for lunch has been made. BEEF!!! I wasn't disappointed. That burger was DIVINE. I ordered a side of fried zucchini. Large, thick, breaded, fried GOODNESS. And I drank my usual peanut butter chocolate milkshake. HOLY sh**. As I sipped the thick, creamy, sweet milkshake, and then bit into the monster burger,it seemed like i heard a choir of angels burst into song. Umm, The El Cajon Fire Department driving through... Umm, I know my Grandma would not approve. She would smack me on the back the head, and tell me, "Aye Marween, dyoor gooweengg to Heeell." But nobody's going to tell her.

There really is no need to write another review of this place, but I am gonna do it anyway. I heart beef n bun!! It's so bad for you, but it's oh so good! I usually get the same thing each time I come. Bacon cheez burger fries, and a vanilla malt. Sometimes I shake things up and get a chocolate pnut butter shake, but vanilla malt never disappoints. I am oh so full right now from my day of binge eating all day, but I would drive to beef in bun right now if I was able to move outta my seat.

Best burgers anywhere! My fellow yelpers... when it comes to burgers I hope you are like me and that you refuse to play games. The only thing this place does when it comes to games, is change them. Game changing burgers friends. Get in there as soon as you possibly can. Even if you pack on a few lbs who cares. Beef n Bun looks good on everyone. Cant wait to get back there.

You MUST order the milkshakes, and get the large. Hands down the best around. I always go through the drive thru with my dog and she loves it because they always offer her a little biscuit. The burgers are pretty good. Nothing to write home about. Fries and Onion Rings, not a fan. I recommend going here and getting a milkshake first, dont let the other things tarnish the amazing quality that the beef and bun can be, Once you have fallen in love, get adventurous with the other items on the menu.

Beef 'N Bun has held a place in my heart ever since high school. It was a favorite of mine throughout, and considering I live about half a block away it still is. Shakes- excellent in every respect. I have tasted just about every flavor they have to offer, and never once walked away with that "i should've gotten..." feeling. They're thick, made on the spot, and tasty in all respects. Beef 'N Bun has everything from burgers (up to a half-pounder), to chicken sandwiches (think chick-fil-a more than wendy's), to corn dogs- that's right- CORN DOGS. Who else serves corn dogs outside the fairgrounds? I really think the key to Beef 'N Bun resides in it's aquatic scenery- i.e. the fish tank containing an eel, a puffer, and another fish that I cannot name. I suggest sitting next to said tank whenever dining there because I find them quite entertaining. The only downside to the Beef 'N Bun is, indeed, how slow the drive-thru can be. One must understand, though, that they're making everything fresh, on the spot, just for you. This isn't some fast food chain with a bunch of pre-processed non-sense; it is legitimate old school american fast food. If you dine in, most of the time they'll bring the food right too you (unless they're pretty busy- then you have to walk the five feet to go get it). This place should definately be on anyone's To-Do list.

This is a great Burger joint. I learned about it listening to Monique and the Man on Jack back in 2008; as I was passing through and prepping to deploy to Iraq. I figured if they were having a contest to fill a bus to go here, it must be something special. After coming here I was surprised that there had been a contest to come here. But, it is a place that I and my family enjoy. Quaint, un-assuming, good food, good prices, I'm a fan. Now I'm stationed in Southern CA and make special trips here for a great burger, fries and shake combo. I've had and enjoyed the Fish n Chips as well. Great stuff and my daughters really enjoy coming here. Worth a visit! Not had a bad meal here, worth the drive if for nothing else the peanut butter and chocolate shakes...ENJOY! Sláinte!

I have been here twice now. I really enjoyed the food. I go back for the onion rings. Fresh battered and fried with big pieces of onion and you get a basket full. It is a good place to get quick good burger, onion rings and a thick thick shake for a reasonable price.

Deliciously yummy doesn't even start to describe these hamburgers!, they are so delish, they are all a hamburger should be. We opted to go there instead of In-n-Out, and it was the best decision we made that day. It's totally way better than in/out, the hamburgers are very filling, I've always felt half way full with in/out burgers, not this place, you walk out feeling stuffed. The fries are not the best but they are okay. Their shakes are so good, and so many flavors to choose from. I tried the Strawberry and was very happy with it. My daughter picked the banana one and she seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. The hamburgers are their main thing though, so if you want a super delicious burger this is the place to go. The place is clean and there is a good seating area. The people are also "friendly", which is always so nice.

nice local burger joint. old school, but tasty menu of burgers, fries, malts, and shakes. i can see why they've survived through the years despite what seems like an outdated establishment. crinkled fries definitely dates them and aren't very good but i support family businesses that manage to make in today's world. i like the blt, simple but they def put the bacon in blt.

The BnB would be a 5 star however, they wouldn't do a grilled cheese for my non red meat eating pal. I was hoping that the gal manning the register didn't quite understand the "grilled cheese" request as she said "it would totally make a mess on the grill." Seriously? Isn't the bread a barrier betwixt the grill and the cheese? My friend didn't want a slice of cheese just thrown on the grill. C'mon now! The burgers, fries and shake combos are quite yummy and worth a trip to the Cajon Zone. They do include onions, pickles, tomaters, lettuce and the dreaded mayo on the burgers but this is not listed anywhere so if you don't like these condiments tell the order taker. Just don't ask for a grilled cheese.

Decided to head here last night...was craving burgers and shakes. Previously, I had only been here for the shakes so we thought we would give the burgers a shot. So glad we did! The burgers were excellent...dare I say almost better than Hodad's (especially since they had half the grease). I had the cheese burger an my DH had the bacon cheeseburger...extra points for the bacon actually being crispy! The fries were good too. And once again...the best reason to come here...the chocolate peanut butter shake! You know it is going to be SO good when it has real peanut butter smeared on the sides of the cup! Hands down the best shake I have ever had! My DH had the Vanilla Chocolate swirl with banana. He likes it but was annoyed that the banana chunks kept getting stuck in his straw :)

Ambiance 3 stars Service 4.5 stars Burgers 3.5 stars Fries 3.5 stars Fish and Chips 4 stars Fried Zucchini 4 stars Onion Rings 2-4 stars (hit or miss) Shakes 14.5 stars (ok, so I cheated a bit to come out to an average of 5) This is the place to go for shakes. Period. I go with the chocolate peanut butter banana (it's not on the menu, but I didn't even know that it wasn't for 10 years or so. They have no problem making it -- they've never even mentioned to me that it's not.) but I've never had one that wasn't like drinking cream and sugar mixed with joy. Burgers are good, though wifey doesn't care for them too much. They're certainly good enough to eat here for the shakes. I'd put Fuddruckers ahead of Beef N Bun, and BNB ahead of Boll Weevil, if that helps. BNB is cheaper than any of them, though. I'd call it a decent restaurant burger on a fast food budget of money and time. Fries are decent but nothing special. Fish is quite tasty, too. Always friendly service that never seems overly fake. Sometimes tghey also have classic car shows... When we moved to San Carlos in 1995, Beef n Bun was one of the 1st places we saw. Being that my dad and I LOVE burgers, we made sure to get the combo that caught our eyes colored on the window in loud colored paint; The Monster Burger combo... And it did not disappoint... the bomb. Now im older, and the staff has changed a lot, but the food is still awesome and made with the same quality. Now i get a 1/2pounder combo and add a Banana Shake. Yumm-o! And their breakfast (even though only served real early am) IS THE BOMB!

Ive been here a few times and its always been good. My favorite things are the shakes and the fried zuchini. Good hamburgers and a real good BLT. Packed with bacon! No little shakes here. Big ass 32 oz. Maybe a bit much for one man to consume in one sitting but they sure are good!

Note to self: no Beef `N Bun the day before starting the diet. BAD idea. Awesome everything food related. 1/4 pound burger is the perfect size and is FANTASTIC. Great rings, great shake, great prices. Okay service and no ambiance, but that's pretty much to be expected and doesn't take away from the experience one bit. Dammit - I think my mouth just watered on my keyboard. Second note to self: yelping about Beef `N Bun during diet is ALSO a bad idea...

I actually never knew the name had whistle stop at the end and i have been going there for years LOL. The burgers at this place are amazing and so are the thick shakes. The fries are great tasting but not enough, luckily you can upgrade to a monster fry but then its too much. My recommendation is getting a large fry and then splitting a monster fry on top and its perfect in your belly ;). The fish bucket is a lot of food and also great tasting. I have never actually gone to it, but they have classic car shows and get togethers sometimes when i drive by it looks like a lot of fun if your into that sort of thing.

this is long over due, beef and bun is the best burger joint in the east county, their burgers are deliverd fresh not frozen daily so thats why they taste so so good its real thats why fresh. 1.burgers super bomb i suggest the monster burger dosnt get any better than that one maby with bacon in it . 2.french fries are super duper bomb their crinkle cut thick and real nic and yes somtimes they will come alil burned but ushually they are really good about getting you a fresh batch if you ask. 3.shakes are super bomb aswell penut butter chocolate 4.and im not sure what the mans name is their i think hes the owner but hes alway very nice and respectfull and so is the whole staff really its a great place two thumbs up from me hell ther was a time when i went here for 6 straight days cuase its so good and guess what im going their right now i live 2 minuts away hahahaha.

I eat with my eyes and I should have known going in that this place had all sorts of Yelp dive-lover ++ reviews going for it. Weak. Lame. Dirty. Half-asinine attempts at gourmet food. Do not know how this got on other peoples' lists.

So, My boyfriend and I ended up going here during one of our breaks from SWC. We were having a tadbit of an adventure trying to find this place but to our surprise, it was RIGHT THERE- straight up Fletcher Pkwy. We've driven up Fletcher's a few times before but we failed to notice Beef 'N Bun Whistle Stop.. our mistake, right? When we first saw this little "stop", we couldn't help but talk about how the building looked like it came from Switzerland or Scotland or..something. The cheesy holiday decorations made as laugh as well- But hey, it was still pretty adorable. Anyway, when we were about to walk through the door, I noticed a little sign in front that said "This door gets stuck" or something along the lines of that. My first reaction to that was, "Hmm, if the door sucks, I hope that the people on Yelp weren't wrong about the ratings." Haha, bad comparison, I know. I forgot what kind of burger meal my boyfriend ordered but let me say this.. The large Butterscotch shake that he ordered was good! We were able to sip through the straw with ease; something that we find troublesome doing elsewhere. Oh, not to mention that the woman asked us if we wanted the burger my boyfriend ordered to be cut in half! I thought that was very thoughtful of her. Even though I wasn't full, our meal and shake was good overall. I think that my boyfriend and I will be coming here again. OH, AND GETTING OUT OF THE PARKING LOT IS DIFFICULT WHEN THE DRIVE THRU IS PACKED! ..but you should have no problem as long as there are people that will back up to let you out. :) - J

I was in a foul mood and needed comfort food. I was working my route in El Cajon and remembered the reviews for this place. I ordered the cheeseburger meal with a chocolate shake and a side of onion rings. (I told you I needed comfort food!) The shake was good. The Burger was good. The fries and rings sucked. They were super greasy with no flavor. I'm glad I tried Beef n Bun, but probably won't make it a regular stop.

Bacon cheese burger, fries, and a choc PB shake for a late night Sat snack. No drive through line; very few people inside. Burger was fantastic. Shake was awesome (and I don't usually like shakes or ice cream). Fries were ok (but so are those from the grocer's freezer). $7 bucks or so is not too bad either!

From my dad and brother: "the burgers are GOOD." From my sister: "I don't have a favorite milkshake, they're all good." From me: "Swirl shake!" From all: "monster fries are a neccessity." This place gets high marks from everyone I know. They even give milk bones to my dog! The only negative I can think of is the extreme fishy smell at the drive in window. But maybe I just have a oversensitive nose. Oh and they never make my french fries as crispy and yummy as my sister's. But maybe that's just me being a spoiled brat. Anyway, this place is a winner.

Nasty. Hitting taco bell for some 33% beef tacos would be a treat in comparison. Drive on!

Pretty yummy! Breakfast sandwiches are basic but delish & a good size. We love the hash browns they give you two with a meal. They have a nice seasoning to them also. Yummy shakes!

I've been coming here since I was a little girl and it's still just as good today as it was then! The fish and chips are the best I've ever had, and love their tarter sauce. The handmade shakes are awesome too, gotta try the peanut butter chocolate, amazing!

  • Drew W.

This place is awesome. Nothing fancy, just really good burgers and shakes. Take warning though that their peanut butter and chocolate peanut butter shakes use real peanut butter and a lot of it so youll probably need something to drink with it as it makes your mouth very dry. Best shakes ever though. I will definitely return here.

First of all, I am all for support of small business establishments. I want them to suceed and not have to shut down. Beef n Bun has been around for decades and are very special for that reason. My husband loves their burgers. I don't think they have a lot of flavor. Last time I was there, I ordered fish and chips just to try. The consistency of the fish was excellent, crunchy and moist. Tons of fish but they did not have much flavor either! The fries were crunchy but they were not that great. One good thing about them is the lack of superficial additives to their food. The food seems more natural and even though the food is fried, it is better for you since they don't add all the bad ingredients some fast food joints do. Now their shakes are EXCELLENT. I want to go back because they have potential. One problem I have is their AC is always set to max and I freeze when I eat there. They are fast sometimes and slow other times. I want them to stay around. You have to try it at least one...

Terrific in every way. Clean, friendly staff and delicious food. PB and Chocolate shake with real whipped cream is not to be missed. We went because of good review and a location near to where we were staying. Don't miss this great place if you are in the area.

I know it's called beef and bun but I'm not really a meat and bread type of girl but I have ate a corndog and a burger from here and it's good and all but this review is about everything else there which to me is better than their beef or buns lol. So this is a cute little mom and pop type of place with a drive thru and dining area inside but it's kind of small. This place is not stingy on their servings and actually they are more than generous. If you want a hefty size ice cream on a cone go here! I mean they pack that cone a mile high full of pure and simple swirly whirly creamy goodness and any flavor is good. In the mood for something fried but want to tell yourself you are being healthy then try their fried zucchini which is the best of both worlds lol, it is a seriously large and in charge portion of golden and fresh beer battered deliciousness. Lastly, the milkshakes are like no other and I will end it with this: my milkshakes bring all the boys to the yard and their like, it's better than yours damn right it's better than yours I can teach you but I have to charge. --kelis

The burgers are pretty good, my only problem is the buns. They are very spongy. Would be 4 star if buns were any good. The veggies on burgers always seems fresh and the staff are great. The best food though is the milkshakes,

I think their burgers and fries are very tasty...it has a nice old fashioned atmosphere. Takes a long time, but thinking it's because everything is made when you order. Great shakes...need to improve on their wait time and parking...drive thru also not very convenient, other than that...A...:)

Good ole greasy hamburgers have some big fat onion rings. It's like food that you had in the 1960's before health and safety concerns were an issue. It's heart attack on a plate.

  • Andy V.

I thought the burger was pretty good. Hot and juicy not dried out, decent topping and bun. Not the best I've had but better then the big national chains. I have to agree with another review here that I noticed a slight fish taste on the fries. I noticed they have fish and chips on the menu and it would seem they probably cook everything in the same fryer. I also tried the fried zucchini as it's a favorite side of my parents so I'm always on the lookout for places that do it right. It tasted pretty good but was a little over breaded. It seemed battered up with I'm guessing the same batter used for the fish and chips. The pieces were large like the size of a kosher dill pickle spear. Good value for the money, I had the quarter pound burger with fries and a drink and the side of zucchini for $8 and change. Wasn't impressed with the decor either. Looks like it hasn't been updated in a very long time. If I try them again I'll probably get it to go. Didn't try the shakes yet which everyone seems to love. So bottom line check it out and judge for yourself but don't come expecting to much.

You know when the need for a burger is just calling your name?...well I usually come here, it totally hits the spot and for not a lot of money..cheesburger with bacon and a chocolate shake! Man, good stuff...Enjoy!

It's all about the shakes & malts. SO effin' good! The BLT is no slouch either. Fried zuchinni is giant zuchinni planks battered, fried and topped with grated parmesan. Burgers are ok, but defintely benefit from being topped with the bacon.

We were looking for reviews for the best milkshakes in the SD area, and this place sounded very promising. We ordered a banana shake and a peanut butter chocolate shake (at the employee's recommendation). They were both awesome! The banana one has a lot of real bananas in there, so it tastes like REAL banana, not the weird banana flavoring that some places use. The peanut butter chocolate one is heavy, but it is very good also. The guy who waited on us was extremely friendly and the place was pretty clean for such a small restaurant. Next time we are in the area, we are going to make a stop to try their burgers. Can't wait!

The milk shakes are sooooo good that even I (lactose-intolerant and generally despise all milk products) think they are divine. The Choc-pb is to die for. burgers= wonderful Fries= heaven in my mouth (especially when dipped into a shake!!!) 2nd best= grilled chicken sandwich (that is, if you are not in the mood for the beefy delight) One thing not to order is the grilled chicken salad (not sure if they still serve this) its basically the sandwich with no bread and no cheese. If you are trying to be healthy don't go here.

If you want to have a heart attack within 30 mins of eating the food here, then by all means!!! EWWW!!! The food is soooooo gross!!! My husband of course loves it, but I can't stand the place! And like my husband said, the kids love the fish tank, BUT THAT'S IT! They aren't fans of the food either!!! They would rather go to Souplantation!

Deliciously toxic! Seriously, both my man and I felt ill due to the amount of palate-pleasing, grease-filled food we managed to consume at the Beef n Bun......1/4 lb cheese burgers, crinkle fries, onion rings, and THE BEST f-ing peanut butter milkshakes....EVER! It's all so tasty you never want it to end but then it does and you're left feeling slightly guilty and ill......but utterly satisfied.

  • Mireya V.

I normally get the mocha malt and love EVERY minute of it, but I decided to get the chocolate peanut butter one this time around. This shake was SOOOOOOO good!!! It has smooth, thick peanut butter swirled into it! It's like drinking a peanut butter cup!

    (5)
  • Chuck L.

Ok I have been going here for years, and I have to say the chocolate shake is one of the best I have ever had. The onion rings are fantastic but the fries are just ok. I always find where ever you go get a 1/2 pound burger instead of a 1/4 pound they are always juicier that the 1/4 lb, well not here they use 2 1/4 pound patties that seem overcooked so the burger to me was so so. I will come back if I am looking for a good shake but burgers are better elsewhere And those booths? damn a larger person barely fits in them, I know I should lose some weight but come on this isn't a tofu bar

The parking here is not much maybe about ten-fifteen parking spots. There is street parking in the distance. The vibe is swell reminds me of a IN N Out burger inside. The prices are fair with food options ranging from burgers, chicken sandwiches to Fish & chips. During my visit, I had a Bacon cheeseburger which was very well presented. The fries are plenty and complete the meal since the burger is a good size. The sauce inside the burger might have been the good taste I got back or maybe the bun itself. I left the place full and satisfied with a good taste in my mouth from the food. I recommend this place as the food is great, customer service is excellent and the presentation of the food looks tasty! Take the time to go and enjoy a great tasting meal!

I would like to start by saying I have been going to Beef N' Bun for years! I LOVE their shakes, my favorite is peanut butter mocha with lots of whipped cream mmmm! The food is also good, love the crinkle cut fries. However, their drive-thru service has turned to crap!! I thought it may have just been a one-time thing when it first happened but I refuse to even use the drive-thru nowadays. When we place our order we are constantly rushed. Immediately after ordering our first combo the girl at the window abruptly asks "is that all?" and continues to do this after every item with extreme rudeness!! Super annoying!!

Beef n' Bun is the epitome of classic fast food dining. Shakes, fantastic burgers, and fried finger food galore. Am I weird because I like fried zuccini? I hope not. I love their FRIED ZUCCINI! Drive thru takes a quite some time when you're there during lunch or early dinner hours...I recommend getting inside and ordering takeout if you're not into dining in.

Ive had pretty much everything on the menu. This. place. is. BOMB. Beef. Chicken. Fries. Shakes. Its everything you want in a burger place. Plus a decent sized fishtank? Just thinking about it makes me hungry!

We go here and we like it. I've been here and the burgers have been amazing and I've been here and the burgers have been bleh. The kids LOVE the fish tank with the eel and we go here mostly for that and the old school appeal. There are not enough booths and usually the staff take up a booth to do some paper work. They must not have an office in the back? The milkshakes are okay. Not amazing, not wonderful, but okay. When my kids spilled water all over the table and floor one time, the lady was super nice, that's cool.

My Nonna used to bring me here as a child, we came for the peanut butter shakes. We used to go to the library and then sneak over to Beef and Bun, Nonna was diabetic, so it was our little secret. I had not been here in a long time, but the shakes are as good as I remember. In high school we used to mix Kalua into the shakes, it made afternoon classes much more tolerable... I brought my son here yesterday, he got a BLT, he is a serious bacon lover, and it had a ton of bacon, and it looked really crispy, he said it was "dewicious!" I have heard that the burgers are good, but honestly I don't think I've ever tried a burger here, the fish and chips are good though. The bathrooms were clean, and the service was good. It was very busy when we went, but they were still friendly and patient with my little dude, and they got his order right...They really have the best shakes I've ever had in San Diego...

  • Don-Don M.

I've been here a few times since its close by to where I work. The burgers are pretty tasty. I prefer the single patty/ quarter pounder. Anything bigger is just a hot mess. As other reviewers have mentioned the fries are frozen, "Ore-Ida" kine. Kinda like Del Taco fries (Wow, I just referenced Del Taco FRENCH FRIES). That being said, I don't mind them. As for the shakes, I've only tried the peach and it was delicious. Since my lunch break is only 30 minutes, I prefer to come here over In-N-Out on the other side of town. The service here has always been fast and friendly.

Grew up in the East County and Beef N Bun is and always was the go to place. They have a great variety of food and it's all made fresh and with quality ingredients. By far, our favorite meal to split is a BLT, fried zucchini and a swirl cone for dessert. The bacon is always great, the lettuce fresh & crisp. It's a great sandwich. But the crowning glory is the fried zucchini. I've never found anything quite like it anywhere else. The zucchini are these long, thick logs dipped in this light, delicious batter and fried to crispy perfection. Topped with Parmesan and served with ranch, it is a piece of deep fried heaven. They have the best shakes, but my #1 favorite is the swirl cone. It's been my favorite since I was a kid...25+ years! We no longer live in San Diego, but visit every couple months. My in-laws live within a couple miles of Beef n Bun, so we're always able to stop in! It's a true original!

  • Yusef T.

Ok I know its not just nostalgia that keeps me coming back to this place, or the fact that Beef & Bun is privately owned and the menu items have remained consistent since the first time I ate here in the 80's...smearing ketchup all over my baseball cards, its most likely a combination of everything. Its hard to find anyone who's grown up in East County and hasn't heard of this place. It's not the healthiest menu and you wont find any diet friendly options here, it doesn't blow away any of the new trendy burger joints that keep popping up around town but if you are in the area and you want to enjoy an almost iconic local spot have no doubt. If you are having a "cheat day" or you could care less about your waste line definitely try the peanut butter chocolate shake. The burgers (for the most part) have a bit of a Wendy's sort of thing going on, a step up however. If you enjoy one you'll enjoy the other ; )

I am around this place around once a month and always see cars there so i decided to try it after all these years. Wll i was a little disappointed. Burger- Good not Great but was decent. Fries- Nasty Onion rings- even worst Shakes- Best thing about this place. When we got there they were out of bananas so i could not get a banana shake which is what i really wanted. I should have known this place wasnt that good because when i pull up to the drive-thru i couldnt smell anything good........ Overall i would not come back to this place unless i was straving and ran out of gas in there parking lot.

Fantastic burgers and amazing shakes--peanut butter is the best!--this burger joint is one of the best in town. The fried chicken special and fried zucchini are amazing, too, and try a root beer float if you have room!

This place used to be pretty good but has gotten worse and worse over the past few years. 5 years ago I would have given this place 4 stars but after several recent failed attempts there lately and this past trip where my burger was almost raw I have to give it 1 star! The quality of the food has definitely gone downhill and gotten pretty bad. The past few times I've eaten there my lettuce has been brown & limp. Not at all crisp or fresh. Tonight's meal was the deal breaker however. Not only was the lettuce once again past it's prime, but half my burger was almost totally raw! Sure it was brown on the outside but inside it was still totally uncooked! Poor food quality and cooking like this could make someone sick! Sadly, after giving this place several more chances over the past few years and tonight's fiasco I will not eat here again. And I would NOT recommend it to others.

Solid burger, has good flavor. Onion rings lack seasoning, had to pull the breading off it was that bad. Stick to the fries, much better option..

The Shakes are the best! They are a must have. The food on the other hand is not that great. They use real peanut butter in their PB Milk shakes and that is what makes it so good!

I had only been here once until recently. I came as a kid with my best friend because her dad loved this place. All I remembered was their zig zag fries like at our school cafeteria. I was craving a milkshake a few weeks ago and I remembered word around the neighborhood was that Beef n Bun made the BEST milkshakes. So far I have been here twice for milkshakes. Try the strawberry/chocolate combo SO yummy!

I heard this place had really good milkshakes so that's the only thing I can review right now. Three words: chocolate peanut butter...and commence drooling. Each sip is like eating a Reese's peanut butter cup. SO DELICIOUS! I'd be down to drive all the way for another one.

what can i say about this place?? if you haven't tried it, please do. The milkshakes are great! I usually order the mocha and banana,,,hmmmmmmm!!! great hamburgers and fries, onion rings are huge and delish!!! great little place and great service!!

So a friend told me about this place and I always promised myself that if I were in the area, I'd give it a try. Today was that day.... The feel is somewhere in between In-n-Out and a mom and pop shop. As you walk in, the counter to place the order is pretty small and seating is quite limited. Perhaps a total of 30 can fit on the inside. There is some outdoor seating available but the time we went, it wasn't too busy so seating wasn't an issue. They have a selection of burgers, chicken burgers and BLT's. We all went with the burgers and the portions are HUGE. Of course it doesn't hurt when you order a 1/2 lb burger. That may have had something to do with the size I suppose, huh? The burger itself is fried but that didn't turn me off any because the ingredients were fresh and the produce on top of the burger was even fresher. The fries? Well I like my fries to be crunchy and I was not disappointed. Crinkle cut fries that were cooked just right. Between the burger and the fries, I just may have to pull out the defibrillator before I go to bed tonight. I am definitely a fan but I don't know that I would make a special trip to dine here again. However, if I am back in the area and need to clog my arteries further, I'll be stopping by.

My kids couldn't survive without this place. They love it. I tried taking them to Wendy's and they said they couldn't eat the burgers because they didn't taste right. They were use to the fresh meat at the Beef and Bun.

The Beef 'N Bun Whistle Stop? With that name, going to give it a try was practically mandatory. This was a pretty tasty burger and an excellent value. I will be back when in the neighborhood. This burger reminded me of the ones served in the bowling alley in my hometown. It was a tad greasy (not to be confused with juicy), but that's okay. It's what I expected. I ordered the half-pound burger ($3.99), with bacon (+$0.69) and cheese ($0.30). Yes, there is one place left on Earth where three dimes still buys something. There was plenty of cheese and two strips of bacon. I didn't try the fries, because, well, I'd rather have a half-pound burger than a quarter-pound one with fries. The dining area was small, but clean. Overall, this was a pleasant experience. Like several other places I have tried recently, there are reviews here claiming that the Beef 'N Bun serves the best burger in San Diego. It doesn't, but do yourself a favor and have one if you are in the area. I know that I will again. With a soda and tax, I was out the door for well under $7. Skip the cheese and bacon, and you'll be under $6.

Chocolate Peanut butter milkshake is all I ever ordered from here and it is highly the best one yet so far in San Diego for me. From reading all the reviews about this place one day when i was in a serious crave for a milkshake near my old work, I was convinced this was a must try. It's funny how I rarely just order a milkshake with nothing along with it anywhere but it sure did hit the spot and I couldn't put it down until i finished the whole thing! When I come through this place I was always lucky to find the drive-thru not that long, but it sure is deceiving. 3-4 cars in line is surely a long waited wait for a good milkshake which I have the patience for and that says a lot already. I was surely pleased and will definitely find myself here whenever my craving comes along no matter what the distance is.

The place I head when I am in the mood for a great burger! The price is right, good selection, friendly staff, They have good combo deals, and you can substitute your soda for a Milkshake for not to much more. I am a huge fan of the Peanut Butter Milkshake.. Once I start drinking it, I can't stop no matter how full I am!! Beware of the deliciousness!!! :) Parking is usually okay, they have a little parking lot, but getting out can be sorta annoying. The seating is limited and the tables usually have crumbs left from who knows when.. Worth it though. .

Very happy with my experience there. The staff seemed knowledgeable and were very friendly. The dining room was very clean for a fast food place as were the bathrooms. I thought the fish tank was a nice addition and that this would be a good place to take the fam for shakes and burgers. Will be back

Classic mom and pop hamburger joint. The food is fresh and made to order. The fries, while crinkle (not my fave) are always crisp. The peanut butter shake lives up to reviews (thanks Yelpers). The staff is always so nice. Sometimes when teenagers work in fast food, they don't seem to care. But everyone here does. Warning: the zucchini fries sounded good but they were gigantic. Essentially a huge zuke cut into 4 chunks. Very greasy. Bonus for kids: Fun fish tank to look at!

The "local burger joint" the way a local burger joint SHOULD be! Great, fresh, well crafted burgers, onion rings, fries - and do NOT forget a milkshake! These things are worth the zillion calories! PS - they'll mix you any flavor combo you want, just ask!

I drive by this place often and never thought anything of it until the Boyfriend one day suggested we go because he had heard of it. We went, got shakes, burgers, fries, and I just had to tried the fried zuccini. Everything was great, the burgers were simple yet delish, and the zuccini I had no idea was going to be so big!! It could be a meal its-self. I got the peanut butter and chocolate shake, and yes they do use real peanut butter. It was all great, I will definitely go back.

My whole family and I love this place. Everything is delicious! The burgers are very flavorful. Fish and chips are really good. And you MUST try the chocolate and peanut butter shake. It is the best I've ever had. The staff is very friendly too.

I pull up to the drive through menu. . . Where the flip are the pictures? I mean. . . Don't get me wrong. Places like well known fast food joints, tacoshops, and 4 star restaurants don't have pictures on their menus either. . . But if there isn't even a general description of what's in a Monster Burger, how am I supposed to know what I should order? Flip forbid I turn into the annoying costumer that won't stop asking questions about everything and take 30 minutes just to order a coke and fries. Basically, we're talking about In 'N Out in the bounies of South Carolina. I refuse to say why. . . The burger was good. I ALMOST fell in love as I took the first 5 bites. The crispy hot toasted bun. The melted cheese on the juicy meat. But then it started to bring up memories. . . An IMPOSTER!!! No other place serves up fast food burgers like In 'N Out. Nice try though. The fries here. Horrible. Think frozen cafeteria fries. And if you're gonna ask someone if they want ketchup and they say yes. . . Don't be stingy and give them more than ONE packet. Really?!! The service was alright. I was taken care of promptly. Got my food in less than 5 minutes. . . Though I do recall one of the two ladies working the window staring at me funny for the longest time. . . Creepy. . .

What we liked: 1. Peanut Butter milkshake - their milk shakes are the best. 2. The burgers - greasy, big, with substantial buns that hold up against the beef patty and veggies. 3. Location and parking - it's easy to spot from the street. Plenty of parking spaces or you can park on the street behind the restaurant. We drive by here all the time and have stopped twice to try their food. It's affordable and so not healthy for you, but delicious. The second time we went I tried the fish and chips and he got a bacon cheeseburger. It was all yummy and greasy. They serve the crinkle style fries and their onion rings are slices that are batter dipped. It was all hot and crispy. The drive thru is always busy but not dining in area. I have always found it clean inside.

I worked at Beef 'N Bun for almost 3 years. I worked the grill, deep fryer, and eventually the drive-thru window/front counter ... I pretty much cooked every item on the menu for several months at a time. I'm no longer associated with the business, but I still go there a lot. 1 - The meat and fish were fresh, not frozen. Not sure who the supplier was, but I can tell you from slapping a few thousand raw patties onto the grill, the meat is the same stuff you would buy to cook at home. Same with all the veggies. We literally sliced the tomatoes, tore the lettuce up, all that good stuff. Only thing that came pre-packaged were the fries, breaded shrimp, and corn dogs. 2 - Fries are fresh 99% of the time. We got a lot of old people that were regulars, and they insisted on freshly dropped fries with their orders. So many of them would request it, that it was just easier to drop new bags of fries all the time. We weren't supposed to, but we would taste the fries ourselves to see if they'd gone stale or not. Most fast food places let fries percolate in the warming tray as long as they could, but with the crinkle fries we served, you can tell the difference, and it did matter to us (if only so we didn't get complaints). 3 - The fried chicken and fish on the menu actually start out raw and dipped in wet batter that we mixed ourselves every morning - again, this is not pre-frozen stuff. Remember that when you order it, and don't be a brat if takes a few more minutes than you expected. 4 - The shakes contain real peanut butter and real bananas. I can't tell you how rare that is for fast food, so you'll just have to trust me. 5 - I worked long enough to last through quite a few other employees coming and going, and one thing I feel is significant is this: either it is the first job for a lot of the teens working there, OR they've been there a really long time. Either way, they're usually eager to please, and totally unlikely to do raunchy shit to your food behind the scenes ... even if you send it back for some reason. From what I hear from friends who worked more prevalent chains, this is not exactly common. Even working there I felt like there was no way we were making a profit by selling such high-quality food at the prices we were. That hopefully tells you a lot about the place. Most fast food places get all their food pre-packaged, frozen, and sometimes already assembled. It's extremely rare these days that a business would actually assemble and cook food in the manner you would at home. It's also a family owned business - to be frank, the guy that owned it was really old and kind of a dick, but "family owned" means a lot to some people. I saw that some people have remarked on how the window in the drive-thru is painted over. Let me clear that up for you: the window was clear when I started working there in 2003, and people were constantly banging on the window if they saw what they THOUGHT was their order, and wanted to make revisions or tried to holler at those of us cooking the food back there, thinking we weren't dressing their burger correctly. It was such a problem that the owner ordered the guy who does the cute little pictures in the front windows to paint it over for us. So it has nothing to do with the grill guy smearing hamburger patties on his face, or whatever it is you think they're doing back there. Give me a break!

First of all you can't go wrong with a chocolate banana peanut butter shake... man, that is the best! You get actual swirls and pockets of real peanut butter. Also, their onion rings aren't half bad... I think everything can use a little salt but that's OK! It's quality product... it doesn't taste like any ol' fast food burger it tastes like something you'd get home cooked. Bacon cheese burger is the way to go... the fries are crinkly... I don't think that's technically what they're called but they are good, I'm a shoestring fry lover myself but everything is pretty good there and service is awesome!

YUM-ALICIOUSE!!! You wouldn't think so, but Beef n' Bun has got thee BEST MILKSHAKES San Diego has to offer. I highly highly HIGHLY recommend the peanut butter milkshake, rich peanut buttery taste sliding down my mouth is what living is all about. The strawberry is good too, it has a strawberry quick taste goin on. oh and their friend zucchini is bomb! they give you gigantic sized slices of breaded and deep fried zucchini that you will find yourself craving days after ordering it. none of the lame penny sized Carls Jr zucchini, this is the real deal, BIG STICK size!... ahh middle school, how i do miss those big sticks ;)

based on simply eating a bacon cheeseburger. for $3.72 it was a good tasting change from chain burger joints. nice buns, kaiser i believe. would've been 4 stars if it had twice as much meat. good employees . this place has been here for many years, many customers(but not overcrowded) & they have a saltwater fishtank(a sign that they's successful) . apparantly they offer many kind of shakes. this is kinda a lame review; wish i at least sampled their fries, fish or fried chicken too. it's refreshing to eat an an independently owned burger place. they have drive thru & breakfast menu too

A friend of mine introduced me to this place in the 70's & this has always been a good place to get a bacon cheeseburger. The fish is outstanding also with a nice crisp batter coating. In all the years I have come here they have always made consistently good food. I'm not a big fan of the fries (I like mine thinner & very crisp) but their zucchinni is good & definitely enough to share with others.

This place is awesome. Look no further if you're into burgers and fries. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and my friend ordered a quarter pounder. Both of us were satisfied. The bill came to just shy of $12 for the two of us. Drinks and fries are included with any burger you order. The fries are great, by the way: lightly salted and crisp. The people who work seem friendly enough and bring your order right to the table--something I wasn't expecting at a fast food joint. We went on a Saturday afternoon and the place was quiet, clean and air conditioned. You can amuse yourself by staring at the near-empty fish tank as you're waiting to be served. A nice place for lunch. I'll be back.

The burgers are delicious...... There like homemade burgers but better ! Will go back many many more times!! Staff is super nice too!!!

For a good burger and a great shake, Beef N Bun is the place to go if you're in this neck of the woods. Delicous shakes and the Bacon Cheese special are my usual. Pretty good service, too, but sometimes it is a bit slow. I would rather they be slow and good, than fast and mediocre. Fried Zuccini is a must try, too! Anybody tried the Tub-o-fish, yet??

Shakes, Malts, and Fried Zucchini.... oh my. This place has definitely got it going on when it comes to health food. Their burgers are a hot tasty mess. Their fries are acordion-esque. They offer a peanut butter shake....nuff said. The staff is a bit quirky... if you have been, you know what I mean. But best of all... this delicious hole in the wall "whistle stop" has a freakin awesome aquarium, with a freakin awesomely bad ass EEL in it. Nothing says east county like greasy burgers, killer shakes and eels...

  • Douchey B.

Give me more of this joint- STAT! If I could eat this crap all day, everyday, I would. No, it's not health food- but why would you think burgers and fries were?! If you care about your arteries- skip it. I LOVE Junior con queso and the fries. What's more this place beats the crap out of any fast food in price. That's right, it's cheap and delicious. I want to lather myself with beef n bun. Someone save me because I am mad about this place.

  • Krystyl F.

I got the monster burger, which was juicy (or maybe greasy but I can't tell the difference when I'm hungry) but kinda bland. I added lots of black pepper to help with flavor. Maybe its because there's too much meat, so I'll try something else next visit. Fries were nothing special. Crinkle cut like the ones we buy from the freezer section. I did get the Peanut Butter Chocolate Banana Shake and I was in heaven. I will definitely drive 25 mins. just for the shake. Drive-thru alone gets 2 stars. Don't need to shower to get some good food here.

Sorry beef n' bun, but I had to knock down two stars for you guys...brother wanted to try something new and so I suggested you guys...thought it would have been a great choice, since I had such a good experience last week. Well...brothers experience wasn't so great, he got the 24 hr food poisoning...:-(

The independent fast food restaurant is somewhat of a rarity in east county. So, you will have to forgive me while gush about this local landmark. This place has been around for a zillion years. It is now just called Beef 'N Bun according to the sign. They have great burgers and as you probably know from reading the reviews they have awesome shakes. LIke everyone else, I higly recommend the peanut butter chocolate shake. Their burgers are served on a fresh corn meal topped bun and come with fresh tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, and a great sauce. They have a monster burger that has three quarter pound patties. I also love the crinkle cut fries. You never see crinkle cut fries around anymore. They have a drive through which is always a plus. The restaurant was remodeled at some point in the fairly recent past so you don't get the old school feel anymore. I guess you can always sit back and gaze into the tropical fish tank while you feast on your big juicy burger. Stop by and have a monster burger, a giant shake, and some crinkle cut fries. Then go see your cardiologist.

This place is great. Decent prices and really yummy food. I always got the bacon cheeseburger until my friend recommended the chicken club and its so yummy now I will have trouble deciding. The shakes are really yummy too.

  • Jennifer E.

I have been going here as long as I can remember! Burgers are yummy and fresh. Okay, they may be a little on the greasy side but it's a burger! Milkshakes and Malts are also very good and a must have if you get a burger. (or if you just have a milkshake craving!) Not the same as In and Out but I think it is just as good!

  • Melanie P.

This place has nasty burgers but there some good things about this place. I only go here for two things.... One for there shakes and malts all flavors and combos of all flavors are amazing two there fish n chips are pretty good. Beat place here in la Mesa.

Discovered this place back in HS growing up in the East County. This place has been an East County hub for burger lover for a lot of folks, for a loooong while. Burgers are money, all of the fried foods are good, but the real reason to go? The SHAKES, which come in a larger than expected variety. They have some real winners there, and nothing makes the classic Americana better than a tasty beverage, speciifically a peanut butter shake. If for some reason you find yourself East County and looking for a non-chain burger, head here.

    (4)
  • William C.

I have been eatting here for years. It is all about the mocha shake and a beacon cheese burger! Shakes are pretty thick and its topped with whipped cream. The burger is always cooked just right and filling, and what the burger does not fill the fries will.

    (4)
  • Brad P.

Good made-to-order burgers, fries, and shakes. Wait time in the drive-thru can be 15 to 20 minutes... so you might as well shut off your car engine.

    (3)
  • KellyAnne S.

I know how bad for you this place is, but that is what makes it so tasty!!!! Oh my goodness.. The burgers are great, and their fish is incredible! I would choose them over a fast-food burger joint any day.

  • Steve H.

I've been going to Beef 'n Bun since 1992. Awesome shakes - the best in San Diego by far in my opinion. My favorite sandwich is the BLT. Good burgers too. Onion rings are so-so, but the french fries are excellent! Always a friendly smiling staff. If you're first in line at drive-thru, you'll have to wait about 5 minutes for your food to be ready, but that's because they make it fresh!! Peanut-butter banana or Chocolate Peanut Butter shakes are my two faves! Can't put them down!!

When you're in the mood for a burger and a shake you can't do much better than this place. They also have some great sides like the fried zucchini strips. Let's face it, not a healthy place to eat - but everyone deserves to treat themselves now and then!

  • Jay M.

Stopped by here over the weekend. They make a good burger. I like the variety of shakes, although sadly at the moment I'm on a calorie count and couldn't fit one of those in, the peanut butter chocolate almost broke my will though.

I had a chance to check this place out after hitting up the Alpine outlets. Read a lot of reviews about the, "Peanut butter chocolate shake. Peanut butter chocolate shake." Had a bacon cheeseburger which was good. Fries were aite. All together this was a cool place to check out if you happen to be remotely in the area.

Onion rings- imagine cutting a whole onion in half and then drowning the slices in batter, tasted like deep fried oil, blek! Worst onion rings ever!

  • Ann F.

I love this place. My family enjoys coming here because it's so casual and everyone is so friendly. They bring the food to the table which according to my 5 yr old is really cool. Our latest visit prompted me to try the Chicken Club with fries. It was really good. Bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, mayo with a grilled piece of chcken. Really Yummy. Hubby ordered some Onion Rings with his Bacon Cheeseburger and they were very greasy looking. He said they were just o.k. I don't do onions so I'll take his word for it. I'm always full when I leave here so I have yet to try a shake. They look wonderful and I love seeing the different generations sitting around enjoying them.

I found out about Beef and Bun one night while at a friends house, She yelled to her husband "How about Beef & Bun honey" I said "Excuse me" We both started laughing and she told me it was the best place for burgers, fries and shakes. She wasn't just whistling Dixie. Next thing you know "Ole Jed's a Millionaire" I was mowing on a chocolate peanut butter shake, juicy bacon cheeseburger and yummy fried zucchini. I must say this might not be the place if you are watching your diet. But honey, once in a while we all have to let our hair down and live a little. In fact I think I'm going to venture over there right now. See ya!

    (5)
  • Carebot B.

I found a string and a hair in my burger and my fries were soggy like someone had sucked on them. I get sick to my stomach when I have to drive by this place now.

This place is small and probably hasn't changed much over the years. The staff is usually friendly. We always order the Bacon Chesseburger with fries. It's very tasty! It comes with lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo. The fried zuchinni is awesome too. I took off a star because the breakfast is not very good at all. But for lunch or dinner it's great.

    (4)
  • Al B.

I have been here over 20 times and the problem is the fried food is inconsistant, Crisp and tasty or greasy and nothing in between. I now look at other peoples food when I get there to see what kind of fried food they are serving that day. The rest of the menu seems to be OK.

    (2)
  • My N.

I've only ever had a chocolate peanut butter milkshake, it was like i was eating a frozen reeses cup, pretty awesome. One of the better milkshakes I've had.

This joint ROCKS! It's been there FOREVER and the food is still affordable and delicious. When I was a kid, I'd walk there with friends for a "dipped cone". Now I go with my family and have yet to find any other place with a better milkshake. My personal fav is the strawberry banana, but my husband and son love the Peanut butter chocolate one. They use REAL bananas and REAL peanut butter...not just some syrup. The burgers are delicious too and they actually taste like meat! Refreshing....when it comes to fast food. In addition to their delicious burgers, the fries are the crinkle cut kind. YUMMY! Two thumbs up!

  • Marvin B.

Based on Yelp reviews I had to drive waaaay out of my way to try this place and I was not disappointed. The burgers are awesome and the chocolate peanut butter shake was better than expected. Still pretty typical looking inside and out it still has an awesome menu. nice and clean inside, and a friendly staff. I think I will be back for more yummy burgers and fries, I will try to make it for breakfast too. you owe it to yourself to try this place at least once. Beef n bun rocks the house.

I love a great burger. I was happy at beef 'n Bun. The burgers aren't fancy by any means but they please the tummy. I also had a shake and fries. The shakes are huge and inexpensive. I believe they are the soft serve ice cream variety with a giant mound of whip cream on top. The food was satisfying but what made me give it 4 stars was the value. Good food for a small price.

    (4)
  • AMANDA L.

wow....so my husband used to work here like 10 years ago so i've had the opportunity to eat beef n bun food many a time! my favorite is the grilled chicken sandwich and the yummy french fries and the bad ass mocha shake! oreo and chocolate are also good choices! the hamburgers are quite good also. Drive through is open pretty late and i think they are open for breakfast now too.

I LOVE me some Beef 'N Bun. And not just because it's fun to watch people's expressions when you recommend it. It's friendly and comforting in a very down-home east county kinda way. Makes you feel like you're supporting a real business and not some soulless chump of a corporation. The shakes and the fried zucchini are amazing, the burgers are above average. Stay away from the onion rings, a bit bland and super greasy. If you like burger joints and shakes, you HAVE to give this place a try. Try the peanut butter and banana shake!

This place has the best food around real beef burgers not frozen, milkshakes are the best good size and worth every cent,i would recommend getting the tub of fish comes with around 16 peices and huge bag of fries for 20 bucks feeds the whole family excellent!!!!

5 stars purely for their banana milkshake - real bananas and delicious. I can't wait until we move back to San Diego someday and I can get super fat from over-consumption.

when i was a wee child, most of my friends loved mcdonald's but my family was (& still is) all about beef & bun....or as i like to call it BEEF & FUN. wow that was lame, now about the food. come here for the best milkshake of your life. my favorite is the chocolate peanut butter because they do not hold back on the pb. their burgers are super good. it's always hard to decide between fried & the fried zucchini. when i get a shake, i always opt for the fries because they are great for dipping. how gluttonous of me!

    (5)
  • Toru Y.

Good burgers!! I'm actually not a burger guy, but I like the burgers here. I also like how the steaks are thick and big!! not the puny thin fries like some other joints. It's really close to my apartment so when I'm lazy to cook dinner, I can always make that quick run.

  • Chris B.

This place is completely awesome. I always get the 1/2 pounder meal with bacon and cheese with a large chocolate shake, and Im in heaven. As others have said the shakes are insanely good, but the food almost equals it. Definitely a step up from your average fast food place, and a bit back to old style burger joints where they make real hamburgers with real meat. The place is small, but like any fast food burger joint you dont go expecting to dine in luxury, plus my kids love the fish tank in there.

  • Mo S.

We found this place not too long ago and it is totally worth the 15 minute wait in the drive thru lane. Their burgers, fried zuchinni and shakes are soooooo delicious. They have great ham and cheese melts for the kids and other wonderful menu items as well. It is the best mom and pop hamburger stand in East County. I recommend that you go there ASAP if you have never been there. LOVE IT!!!!

This place is WAY better than I expected. When my brother wanted to take me to a place called Beef and Bun that looked outdated and kinda shabby, I wasn't too hopeful. But.....the FOOD! Just...GO THERE! And try the shakes.....trust me.

bacon cheeseburger is delicious and full of flavor, I'm not usually a burger girl. the fries are crinkle cut and great too. pb chocolate shake is a meal in itself!

  • Dawn B.

On a scale of disgusting to delicious, I'd rank Beef N Bun as ok. Not the worst thing I've eaten, but still a bit disappointing. Let me break it down for you. Beef N Bun came recommended by some girls on my softball team. While these are girls whose opinions I value, I'm starting to think we don't necessarily speak the same language when it comes to food. I'll admit that part of the problem may have been in the fact that I ordered fish and chips from a place that screams red meat. The fish was fine, but the breading lacked flavor. The fries were decent although I'd suggest ordering them well done as they were a bit on the soggy side. My girlfriend ordered a burger, and it was definitely a much better choice, but the onion rings that came with it were even more disappointing than the fish. They were greasy and had absolutely no seasoning. I'd recommend taking a pass on the onion rings. The only saving grace at Beef N Bun was the banana milkshake and the fact that the whole meal was about $12 for the two of us. My arteries hate me right now, but then again, so does my liver.

Killer shakes! My favorites are vanilla with malt and chocolate peanut butter (around $3.50). Great to wash down an order of fried zucchini spears. And no I don't want to know the calorie count. Sometimes you just gotta. The place has been there forever it's on Fletcher Parkway where El Cajon, La Mesa, and San Diego all intersect. I suppose I should try a burger one of these days.

    (4)

almost hodads...almost. but really good. shakes are good too

    (5)
  • Todd F.

I love a really good burger joint. This place so doesn't disappoint. The burger's aren't that large, so don't be shy about ordering the half-pounder. I also got the onion rings which heavily battered and deep fried so you may want to stick with the fries which are crinkle styled and looked good. They're apparently well known for their milkshakes and malts. I had a regular sized vanilla malt which was really tasty. Regular size is a like a 16 ounce Pepsi cup that comes with whip cream piled on top. We saw someone else order a large which was at least a 22 ounce Pepsi cup with whip cream piled on top. I hear the best shake choice is the peanut butter chocolate one. I kind of wish I had tried it and left off the onion rings. Oh well, I guess that leaves something to try for next time. If you're nearby this place make it a point to stop by and fill up on this unhealthy goodness. You won't be sorry.

  • Melvin M.

This is truly an amazing, old fashioned, burger shop. If you are craving a quality burger that tastes just like you used to have when you were a child on holidays, this is the place. The reason for the 4-stars is due to their very old decor and lack of remodeling since I've been coming here for over 10 years. The milkshakes are on another LEVEL! Thick, cold, tasty, and a lot of flavors to choose from. This place reminds me of old diner burgers and fries from movies back in the day. Enjoyable.

  • Mary K.

I've been wanting to try this place for a really long time and I finally got too! Sadly, it wasn't as amazing as I expected. The service is great, friendly and fast. The problem here is flavor. We tried their onion rings, which desperately needed some salt and pepper. Zucchini was also lacking seasoning. The burger was good. Very fresh and tasty. The fries also needed some salt, but were hot and crispy. The shake was probably my favorite part of it all! I wanted chocolate and banana, but they were out. So I got strawberry and it was delicious! I'd love to come back, but most of it was just too bland for my liking. It beats fast food chains though.

    (3)
  • Nikki H.

Best shakes. You can order mixed flavors and they are thick. Only wish I could order small size. The burgers and the crinkle fries are good. Corn dogs are crunchy on the outside. Zucchini is greasy but husband enjoys them. Onion rings are crispy also. We really just go here when we want milk shakes well worth the drive.

  • Anza F.

Dude. Minus one star for the giant pot hole in a drive thru known to man. (Annoyed face) Their burgers are somewhat similar to in-n-outs and are equally as delicious but with a different taste to them. If you haven't tried their chocolate banana shakes, omg definitely do yourself the favor and order one! So dang good. I haven't been back for a while, but I'd so be back soon!

  • Kyle D.

I come here for the half pound combo with the chocolate shake and it's absolutely delicious! The staff if always very nice, always a great lunch hour away from work during the week. My only complaint is the seating can be somewhat limited when it's busy... So when I look over to the seating by the fish tank and the manager/owner is hogging a seat that could be seating a paying customer, I get extremely annoyed. Do the paperwork after hours or at home like a normal small business owner. Otherwise, highly recommended for a burger and milkshake lover!

  • Serena D.

The prices here are really good. We both got the fish and chips, the portions were huge. We couldn't finish. the quality of the food was on par with what you would expect at a road side burger joint. Good fries and the fish was flakey, not mushy. It was good. Be careful if you order a shake though! The shakes are delicious but HUGE. A small comes in a medium sized cup and the large came in an extra large cup. We couldn't finish the shakes either.

    (4)
  • Jennifer M.

We found this place just trying to get a quick dinner before driving back home to AZ. The burgers are delicious, the onion rings are HUGE and amazing, and the chocolate PB shake was awesome! Service was really quick too. Just a small little burger place but it beats the crap out of any other place with a drive thru. 5 stars as far as fast food is concerned.

    (4)
  • Dana R.

My family really likes this place. We've had the hamburgers and fries and milk shakes. Everything has been pretty good every time. I especially like the blt sandwich. It's full of bacon. I have mine with crinkle fries which are my personal favorite. I also enjoy the vanilla shake. My kids are more adventurous with their shakes and find it quite a treat. The decor is okay. The fish tank really adds nothing to the place and one time I was there when an employee was cleaning it out and was standing on tables dripping water everywhere. It was a little odd. The employees seem to like working there and are pretty efficient.

This is a great place to eat, the hamburgers are delicious, and the fried zucchini is to die for. You have to try the Zucchini!

    (5)
  • Bailey G.

The milkshakes are to die for they are so amazing!!! Real ice cream used and fresh fruits you can actually taste when enjoying your shake. Also the food is pretty amazing too. Just such a classic place with great food! Love this place! Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the drive thru line can really be long sometimes and takes awhile. But so worth it!

One bite into his bacon cheeseburger my husband said "oh we're coming back here for sure". He got the combo and substituted onion rings and I got two pieces of fish all for $12. The onion rings were huge and the patio was nice and shaded with a cool breeze.

Fun place to go with friends or family! Really good fries and had a delicious grilled chicken, and of course shake! Interestingly dipping fries in the shake is a thing there and I tried it.. Not bad! Good price too, $8 for satisfying burger, fries, and shake.

It seems that when we're kids, we care less about the quality of the food or service provided by neighborhood hangouts than we do about their willingness to let us.. well... hang out. I revisited Beef 'n Bun Whistle Stop recently, and was surprised at the number of teenaged kids dining in and picking up carry out orders that were eaten in the parking lot. I didn't grow up in El Cajon, but had I done so, I'm pretty sure I'd have been a BnB regular, too. I ordered a Half Pounder burger, no lettuce, fries and an extra-chocolate shake with banana. The meal was huge, but pricey, costing $9.95. BnB burgers remind me of those I used to get at the lunch counters of DC-area People's Drug Stores: that is, irregularly shaped, barely seasoned and a bit greasier than burgers from a fast food chain. They also resemble burgers someone might make in a frying pan at home, if people still did that. The buns BnB uses are fresh and doughy - a good thing - but they're formed in such a way that they break into one-inch sections (think monkey bread), once the juices and grease reach the bun. This may be intentional. I note that BnB double-wraps their burgers, like Carl's Jr. does, perhaps to provide diners some protection against leakage. Toppings are basic: tomato slices, lettuce leaves, raw white onion rings, dill slices, ketchup and mayonnaise. Everything is fresh and applied in ample, not overdone, portions. As other reviewers have mentioned, Beef 'n Bun sells crinkle-cut frozen fries, which aren't bad if you get them the day the fryer grease is fresh, and the fry cook's not too busy to let the fries cook all the way through. Now, about that shake: my server moved a half-gallon container of "Soft Serve Vanilla Flavored Reduced Fat Ice Cream Mix" out of his way in order to pull a milkshake cup's worth of chocolate soft serve for my drink. Then he added chocolate syrup and milk, chopped in most of a ripe banana, set that sucker on a mixer for a bit, and after wiping up some overage and bagging up my order, handed me lunch. The shake was not as thick as one from a typical fast food place, which I appreciated, and the flavors were great... authentic and substantial. The banana (a last-second inspiration on my part) made the drink a bit slimy on the tongue, and the mixer hadn't completely pulverized it, so I got bonus chunks of banana popping out through the straw every now and then. Overall, a great tasting drink, but not one I'd recommend to those who might be put off by these features. Beef 'n Bun won't kill you, and the flavors might take you back to happier times, but with so many better options available around town, I wouldn't consider BnB a destination restaurant. Unless you're 16, and just hanging out.

I took my Teldata motley work crew to a new spot, sometimes it's a gamble, plus these characters are picky with their 60 minute lunch period. The place was solid, a well earned B works for this place. Prices are fair, no one left any sign of their burgers, the fries were super hot and they actually added the salt prior to serving them. The staff was fine, the inside was a bit old school, but if I'm in the area, I'll drop by and order the fish and chips. My boss left me her leftover peanut butter shake, it was good.

Jesse: But--but are you okay? Tulip: Yeah, fine. I checked out the bad guy's place and shot them up a little bit, you know. There were quite a lot of them, and one guy nearly got me with a throwing knife But I know you'll be cool with that, because you can trust me to handle myself." Garth Ennis - Preacher I'd read this place has been around for 40 years, family owned, and had good fried zucchini. Love the old style building. :-) Nothing like this in my hood as it's fresh and upscale. *sigh Really cool painted Mother's Day greeting on the window. :-) The fried zucchini was big and had big zucchini flavor. I like big pieces like this as the zucchini flavor isn't hiddlen by the batter which was good and crunchy. :-) Very good dish. My fav zucchini is still Del Mar Fair zucchini as I prefer the Japanese style tempura batter which imparts a lighter flavor. The fried cod had the same crunchy batter and was very good. Very similar to the fried cod at Mr. Fish & Chips and Chef John's. The vanilla shake was great! The girl doing everything made it thick as requested. :-) It was almost solid and had excellent creamy vanilla flavor. :-) This is probably the 2nd best shake I've ever had. :-) This place is better than okay. :-)

Simple review for a simple place. Yesteryear style fast food joint complete with pimply faced high school kids manning the counter and grill. Ordered a bacon cheeseburger special w/thick crinkle cut fries and a vanilla shake. Burger - Bonfire 4th of July style and made to order. Flat top toasted sesame bun, imperfect hand formed patty cooked well done, cool crispy lettuce, tomato, pickle, thin cut bacon, and a slice of good ole Merican' cheese. Falls on that good but one tier lower than In-n-Out spot. Shake = Dairy Queen Simple goodness. What are you waiting for?

I've only been here once... I have lived in the area for over 4 years and I was always curious about this particular place. A few weeks ago I finally decided to stop by. I automatically fell in love with! I know it is nothing fancy or not necessarily the kind of place people "fall in love with" but there is something about Beef N' Bun that is so homey and so not California! I felt like I had automatically been transported to a small town somewhere else - and I needed that! The food was good, way too good because i ate two corn dogs and that is not acceptable! lol!!!! I will be back!

Most of these reviews are on point when it comes to their burgers, fries, and shakes. This isn't Hodad's or even In N Out. Just old fashioned burgers fries and shakes, more or less. There menu is the same as when I went here 10 years ago. Some real gems on here too. Fish N Chips is good, BLT is the bong diggity and their breakfast sandwiches rock! Don't miss these! Also, love the Peanut Butter Banana shake. Go get it!

Usually one of my favorite treats, but tonight we waited in the drive through for over 20 mins and when they gave us our shakes, they were WARM and watery. Obviously they had been sitting for a loooong time. What's most disappointing is that the employees thought it was ok to serve the shakes! Gross. ****7/11/15 UPDATE Against my better judgement we tried our old favorite for a summer treat. AGAIN, we places our order and waited 10 minutes in line. They must have made the shakes as soon as we placed our order because not only were they watery and warm, but the cups were already sweating! This is a training issue that could easily be fixed if management cares to remedy the situation. Considering they didn't respond to my first review, I doubt they care.

The BNB has been an E. County establishment for decades. Yet I have managed to have never wandered in. Used to be big w the local car clubs. The "Over The Hill" gang used to rule this place on Fri nights. I imagine most of their membership is part of the "In The Nursing Home" crew by now. So today I got the bacon cheeseburger combo w choc/ peanut butter shake. The latter being the highlight of my experience today. The shake is perfect for what it is. A shake connoisseur would not be disappointed with it. So come get some. Funny how a one off place can be so right in one thing, but be so off everywhere else. I'm thinking RainMan.... But I digress. The burger was just ok. Uninspired comes to mind, but equal to about a Wendy's burger. There were no onions included. And we shouldn't have to ask for them. The fries are chunky steak style, cooked unevenly w some burnt, and seem like the frozen bag of 'em you just picked up at the store. Tasted like dirty fryer oil, as well. Note to would be restauranteurs: If you can perfect your Shake & your fries, you are on your way to greatness. Go "half ass and I don't care" then you are stuck in mediocrity and likely on the road to BK. Like the old song goes, "You got some fries to go w that shake?!" I sure do, and they will knock your socks off, is what the proud owner can say. The condiment section earns a star by offering bottles of Tabasco , Heinz malt vinegar, and good mustard to pile on at will. Service is funky, small townish, but mostly absent like in the movie, No Country for Old Men. My recommendation, if you've driven past here for years like me, stop on in or slide through the drive through, to put another notch in your burger belt, just to say you've been. Otherwise, too many other better choices and places within 15 miles to go to.

One of our favorite stops for shakes and burgers. The staff is always friendly and the food is served quickly. We have never been disappointed coming here. They are also very dog friendly providing water bowls and treats at the door.

Foods pretty good, it's a cute little place. When we went it was really crowded and the employees were all kind of snappy and rude but I'm sure when it's not so busy it's better

I have been a customer here for about 15 years, having given them a lot of business off and on over the many years. Ive also reviewed BnB before. My customer experience and grading of BnB have changed these last several months. The last two times Ive gone to BnB, something has been wrong. I went a few weeks ago for my regular chicken club special and was served a semi-cooked chicken breast. Nothing like being a bite or two into a chicken sandwich and seeing RAW CHICKEN in the middle. I wont go into what this can do to people.. Then today I finally went back after an unusually long delay to give them another try. I had eated dozens of chicken sandwiches from this place and it happened once. Sh*t happens. Well today they got my shake flavor wrong. The whole reason I drive up there from el cajon and its not what i ordered when i got home. On top of that, the fish sandwich I paid 3.59 for had a tiny piece of fish in it that was a little bigger than HALF the size of the bun. Also a 1/4 pounder we got was dry and smashed with little flavor. After all these years I think Im done eating here for a while. A good while this time. They may see me a few times this year for a shake but the few times a week like last summer is done. A shame.

Staff is friendly. Burgers are pretty good. Not huge but pretty good tasting. Nothing spectacular but a decent burger from a local burger joint which do not exist like they use to before.

I found this place while running errands one day, and stopped in for a quick breakfast. This fun little mom and pop place had friendly staff who served me right away. The thing is, there wasn't any of the corporate politeness, it was all genuine and casual... like what you might hear from family. The food was filling, the parking lot was ample, and access off Fletcher was a breeze... I'll visit them again soon.

This has been my go to place when I want a really good hamburger for a reasonable price. I have been patronizing beef n bun since my adult children were kids and playing little league. It has never been a disappointment ! I recently brought a couple of my friends who had heard about the place but had never been. They were absolutely thrilled with the shakes and burgers. The staff has always been exceptionally warm and welcoming and the food has been great. I would recommend beef n bun to anyone who would like a great hamburger , absolutely amazing shakes and some good fries! It has been around a long time and that is why!

Beef N Bun is a highlight of Fletcher Hills. They have really good huge fries and awesome shakes. I use to come here every Monday with my carpool to get ice cream cones. It's also walking distance from my house and has a super cool fish tank inside!

The staff is very friendly and the whole place has a really old school vibe, I love it. I always get the grilled chicken sandwich and for what you're paying it's pretty good, along with the fries. IT IS THE PEANUT BUTTER MILKSHAKE THAT GETS ME OH MY GOD IT'S HEAVENLY. Overall, it's a good place to get a quick bite to eat. I'll definitely keep on stopping by.

At this moment I'm enjoying my fish sandwich...the fish is fresh and taste fresh...no greasy taste unlike other spots I've been....I especially like that they make them as you order...the lettuce is fresh and crunchy the bun has sesame seeds makes every bite even more tasty and for each bite I take is a delight..what a scrumptious sandwich! Definitely, very enjoyable and very happy that I stumbled upon this lovely joint.

Yuuummmm!!!! The chocolate peanut butter shake is amazing!!! I was a little leery about coming in here. But once I saw my burger and fries I knew I'd like it. Nothing over complicated with the menu (sometimes too many choices can be overwhelming). The burger meat is juicy and done just right. They even have a drive thru (which I'll have to try out sometime).

Love the burgers! The banana shake is to die for, hope to not gain to Michelle weight with this place jus up the road a bit. Breakfast is also good, the has browns are the bomb and decent sausage busicuits and gravy. Only one down fall was the onion rings but hey they just were not that flavorful. Keep up the good work, the service is always quick and cashiers are very friendly.

Ticked. After an 8 hr shift and starving to death I had a last minute cancellation so I ran to get a bite at Beef n Bun and they seriously refused my business because I had a $50 bill. It's not like they don't know me. I've worked down the block for 5 yrs. I remember them doing this to me a couple yrs ago in the drive thru because I used a card for a $6 transaction and forgot my ID after already making my food and waiting 15 minutes. Only gave 2 stars because the food is good, sadly the customer service is Flat.

I've lived close by for years and I drive past this place all the time and I don't know why it's taken me so long to stop here. A bacon cheeseburger and a vanilla shake and I was one happy girl. This will definitely be a regular stop for me from now on. I am a sucker for a simple burger and crinkle cut fries. And that shake! Oooh yes. And the water dish and treats outside for dogs was a little touch I really liked. I know now I can come by with my little fur buddy and share a burger and some fries with him :)

Went here last week with my fiancé for the first time. It was not his first time coming here might I add. He is native to San Diego I am not. The food was good, the prices were definitely fair for what you got. The burgers and the shakes were delicious. But like most people noted the fries were plain as could be. They were my favorite crinkle cut, and it's a perfect fry if you're like me and my fiancé and put malt vinegar on everything. But the fries are my only complaint here. We'll be back but maybe next time instead of fries I'll try something else.

two words; hella good. !! My hubby and I thought we'd live on the wild side tonight and get a little naughty with some calorie indulgence. So we headed straight to Beef & Bun to find out what all the hype is about. When I say that my hubs is a chocolate peanut butter shake connoisseur, he IS THE one to vouch. These were THE MOST INCREDIBLE milkshakes we've ever had! Made with true, down home, heart!!! Can't wait to go back for another frosty treat, and really looking forward to trying a burger sometime! Yummmmm

Pretty good. Has that hometown feel to it. My bacon burger was really fresh & so were the fries. I would go back to try the Milkshakes & the Onion Rings. We in there car there & ate while watching car after car pull up to order. They stay busy and that's always a good sign. We ordered 2 bacon burgers combos. The bacon was crisp and I like the freshness of the bun. Not a bad $13 spent.

The burgers were good, not great tho. The meat seemed fresh, but everything needed some more seasonings. Onion rings were large and crisp and the fries were decent for the frozen variety. The chocolate malt was great, nice and thick and malty!
